Decadent desserts are a gift! There are times when something buttery, gooey, spiced, and warm is all that will hit the spot. These Apple Dumplings are perfect, they are incredibly easy to make, and everyone will love them. Be prepared to give out the recipe because you will be asked for it… a lot!
I make this not only for my family, I take it to brunches, potlucks, parties, and picnics and the response is incredible. Depending on the event, I may or may not take ice cream, but it is fantastic plain as well. I think most everyone loves a sweet treat, and this ticks every box – and it is quick to make so that can never be an excuse!
The beautiful presentation is also a remarkable sight. It is such a simple dessert and I love how gorgeous it looks after baking. Keep this recipe close, make it often, and enjoy!
INSTRUCTIONS
2 granny smith apples
2 (8 ounce) cans crescent rolls
1 cup butter (2 sticks)
1 1⁄2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cinnamon, to taste (you will sprinkle over the top)
1 small (8 oz.) can of Mountain Dew soda (or 2/3 of a 12 ounce can)
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350° F.
Grease a 9×13 baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
Peel and core apples.
Cut apples into 8 slices each.
Open the crescent rolls and separate each triangle.
Roll each apple slice in a crescent roll beginning at the wide end.
Place the rolls in the prepared baking dish. They will be touching.
In a medium microwave safe bowl, or a saucepan, melt the butter, then add the sugar and barely stir.
Add vanilla to the butter mixture and stir.
Pour the butter mixture over apple rolls in baking dish.
Pour Mountain Dew around the edges of the pan and a little down the center.
Sprinkle with cinnamon and bake in preheated oven for 30-40 minutes – you want the top to be a nice golden brown and crispy.
Don’t be alarmed about the liquid in the pan. It is supposed to be there!
Serve with ice cream and spoon a bit of the sauce from the pan over the top.
Enjoy with no regret!
NOTES
SPICES: The cinnamon is wonderful on its own, but adding ginger and nutmeg is a lovely combination.
SODA: You can use soda (such as a store brand) that is like Mountain Dew and the result will be the same. If pouring from a larger bottle, you will need 1 cup (8 oz.). Ginger ale or a lemon lime soda also work well. To cut back on sugar, diet or “zero” versions are great to use.
TOPPING: Vanilla ice cream is delicious, but you can also top with whipped cream!
SAUCE: Save any remaining sauce – transfer to an airtight container and reheat to drizzle over ice cream!
FRUIT: For a nice variation, substitute peaches for the apples. It is divine!
PREPARATION: This recipe is quick and easy, so it is best made right before baking. Making ahead of time or freezing isn’t recommended. Serving it freshly baked (and possibly still warm) is what makes this fantastic.
