While there are many comfort recipes that you could call upon to drag you out of that downtrodden abyss, none other beats this super awesome patty melts with secret sauce recipe.
This recipe is made with a ground beef patty layered with caramelized onions, melty cheese and a secret sauce, yielding such a delicious taste that will leave you feeling like you just went on vacation to heaven.
Patty melts with secret sauce is a hit any day, anytime. It’s become one of my husband’s favorite meals and is now a staple in my house. There’s a reason this meal is a staple in so many diners across the country – and it’s not just because of its awesome flavor. This recipe is also super easy to make, coming together in less than an hour.
Prepare this at home for the ones you love and serve with some Rye bread or any buns of your choice. Remember to make the secret sauce ahead of time.

Ingredients
For the patty melts
1½ pounds ground beef
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
12 slices of sourdough bread
½ cup Secret Sauce
3 medium Vidalia onions, thinly sliced
6 slices Cheddar cheese
8 tablespoons unsalted butter
Secret Sauce
¼ cup Dijon mustard
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon barbecue sauce
½ teaspoon hot sauce
How to Prepare
For the secret sauce
Step 1:
Combine the mustard, mayonnaise, barbecue sauce, and hot sauce together in a small bowl. Stir well to mix properly, then cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
For the patty melts
Step 1:
Add the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to a large bowl, and then combine well. Shape the ground beef mixture into six oval patties
Step 2:
Add 2 tablespoons of butter to a medium-sized cast-iron skillet and then melt over medium heat. To the melted butter, add onions and cook with continuous stirring until the onions are soft and golden brown.
Step 3:
Transfer the ground beef patties to a large cast-iron skillet and cook over medium-high heat for about 2 minutes or until the patties are brown and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and wipe the skillet clean.
Step 4:
Layer 1 bread slice with 1 tablespoon Secret Sauce, 2 tablespoons caramelized onions, 1 slice of cheese, 1 cooked beef patty, and another 1 tablespoon Secret Sauce. Then top with another bread slice. Repeat with remaining bread, Secret Sauce, caramelized onions, cheese, and patties.
Step 5:
Heat the cleaned large skillet over medium-high heat. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet. Cook sandwiches individually for about 3 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through, flipping once.
Step 6:
Serve and enjoy!
TIps
- You may use margarine in place of unsalted butter. Just remember to adjust the salt and butter contents accordingly.
- If there are any leftover secret sauce, store airtight in the refrigerator and allow to come to room temperature before reuse.
