Ingredients

6 medium baking apples

Pie dough for a 9-inch double-crust pie

For the filling:

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into 6 equal pieces

6 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon apple pie spice

For the sauce:

1 cup unfiltered apple juice or apple cider

¾ cup lightly packed light brown sugar

¼ cup unsalted butter

Cooking Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375 degree Fahrenheit and grease the baking dish, then set aside. Peel and core each apple and place in a bowl of cold water with a squeeze of lemon juice.

Step 2: Roll the homemade pie dough into a large rectangle, about 21×14 inches and them into 6 equal pieces, about 7×7 inches each. Stir together the granulated sugar and apple pie spice in a small bowl.

Step 3: Place a cored apple into the center of each dough piece and also one of the butter pieces and a scant tablespoon of the spiced sugar mixture in the center of the dough. Cover the dough up with its corners over the apple, using your fingers to pinch the edges to seal.

Step 4: Repeat for all of the remaining apples and dough pieces and place in the greased baking dish, also place the sauce ingredients in a saucepan and boil over medium heat, while whisking frequently. Once it has boiled and the sugar dissolved, remove from the heat and pour it over the apples evenly. Then sprinkle the remaining spiced sugar on top of the apples.

Step 5: Allow to bake for 50-55 minutes, or until it is golden. Allow it to cool slightly. Then serve warm with some of the sauce.

Tips:

  • When using store-bought pie dough, unroll the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces.
