Caramelized Onion Dip Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced (yellow or sweet onions work best)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, to enhance caramelization)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Fresh herbs for garnish (optional), such as chives or parsley

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and salt. Stir to coat the onions in the oil and butter.
    • Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for about 20-25 minutes until they are golden brown and caramelized. If they start to brown too quickly, reduce the heat.
    • Add the sugar (if using) and minced garlic, and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the garlic is fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Dip Base:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, and cream cheese. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  3. Add Seasonings:
    • Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard (if using), black pepper, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix until well combined.
  4. Combine with Caramelized Onions:
    • Once the caramelized onions have cooled slightly, fold them into the dip mixture. Make sure they are evenly distributed.
  5. Chill the Dip:
    • Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 24 hours) to let the flavors meld together.
  6. Serve:
    • Before serving, give the dip a good stir. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired. Serve with your choice of chips, crackers, or fresh veggies.
