Instructions
1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
2. Make the Mushroom and Onion Gravy:
In the same skillet, add butter and vegetable oil. Heat over medium heat.
Add the sliced onion and cook until softened and caramelized, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add the mushrooms and cook until they are browned and tender, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute.
Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom and onion mixture and stir well to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
Gradually add the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce.
Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
3. Combine and Serve:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the gravy. Spoon some of the gravy over the patties.
Simmer for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the patties to reheat.
Serve the hamburger steaks with mushroom and onion gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or alongside some steamed vegetables.
