For this recipe, thinly sliced potatoes and onions are layered in an easy homemade cream sauce and baked until it is tender, golden, and bubbly for a perfect potato.

Ingredients
4 cups thinly sliced potatoes, (Yukon Gold or Russet; about 2 pounds)
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 ½ cups milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 dash cayenne pepper
1 ½ cups grated sharp cheddar cheese , divided

How to prepare
Step 1:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then grease a 1.5 quart baking dish.
Step 2:
Melt butter and stir in flour in a small saucepan. Then whisk in the milk very slowly and season with salt and cayenne. Allow the sauce to cook sauce on low until it is smooth and boiling, while also stirring occasionally with a whisk.
Step 3:
Reduce heat and stir in 1 cup of the cheddar cheese. Then place half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, and pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Do this again with the second layer of potatoes and cheese sauce.
Step 4:
Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of cheddar cheese on top, and top with some paprika for color.
Step 5:
Allow to bake uncovered for about 1 hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit or longer until the potatoes are soft or when the fork goes into it easily without force.
Step 6:
Remove from the oven and set aside to cool for a few minutes before serving. You can serve this recipe with any other delicacy of your choice.
Tips and variation
If you are doubling, you can use a 9×13 pan for convenience and easy baking.
